Kabul Press: With your new film THE PERSIAN DINNER, what message do you want to transform to the viewers?
Amin Wahidi: Well, first of all, thanks a lot for this interview. In Dari we have a good proverb that says, “A perfume scents by itself and doesn't need perfumer's explanation”, so the same case is with a piece of art or literary work. Based on this saying, I believe if there is a message, my film itself should transform, so I don't want to say about it now. I also consider myself a story teller, so, I don't make a lot of efforts on how strongly transform messages through my films, but I do my best to tell a story and let the viewers have the space of thinking about it, even after they leave the movie theatre.
So, saying this, I would only recommend the Kabul Press readers to watch THE PERSIAN DINNER when it will be released in the movie theatres.

Kabul Press: So you mean, you are not a film director who uses symbols and metaphors in his works?
Amin Wahidi: Not really, or at least, not in my last two works. In a couple of my first short films, I was very precise and did all the shootings frame by frame by the help of storyboard, it was from 2003- 2007 but then I discovered a new style of making films, where one can leave a lot of space and freedom for improvisation and for what really happens on real time on the set. Thus now I have totally changed my point of view about cinema and way of making films. Also because, the language of films nowadays are much more different than a few years back, therefore the style of how to make films influences the language of a film.

And since I discovered myself, not to be a filmmaker of millimeteric frame by frame accuracy, I find myself easier when there is improvisation that relies on what is going on at that moment on the set, because as a person I am a bit disordered when doing my things and most of the time when filming I enjoy letting things in disorder or letting things go the way they go. Partly, may be, doing independent films has forced me becoming this way. Because when you do independent films, you are supposed to be very creative, active, a quick decision maker, which sometimes can have negative effects as well on the final result of your product. Mostly I use the real locations as the sets of my short films, this way; the result is very realistic as well as economic.

Kabul Press: Could you tell us, what exactly is The Persian Dinner about?
Amin Wahidi: Well, The Persian Dinner is a film about social classes, integration, racism, friendship, Expo, corruption, love, hate, betrayal and more than all, it is about the clashes between the old and the new generation of Italian society, nowadays.

Kabul Press: Could you explain it better, the influences of independent films on director's creativity?
Amin Wahidi: Well, the short films I made so far are all low-budget ones, which are mostly auto-financed or are made by the help of my friends. In this case, you have to be very fast, clever, full of contacts and creative. For instance, first, if you don't have enough equipments, you just borrow them from your friends and add their names in the credit titles of the film, then you do your best, not to pay for locations to reduce the costs, and if you do find actors who take part in the film without being paid, then it is fantastic. In the case of THE PERSIAN DINNER, most of the actors are professionals but none are paid, because they liked the project and took part in it on honorary basis for which I am grateful.

Then remain only transportation expenses, and the meal which is usually sandwiches on the set, and a place to stay.
For costumes as well, we did our best to utilize the actor's own costumes, this way, you save a lot on costs. And if you find people who work with you on honorary basis for post production as well, then, your film is a really very low budget.

Kabul Press: What is in THE PERSIAN DINNER that makes it unique?
Amin Wahidi: Well, good question! First, it is the story of THE PERSIAN DINNER that makes it unique, because it is very simple story at the same time, it has its complexity. Then the cast is extraordinary and the crew is exceptional. So, there was a lot of positive energy behind this project and obviously the final outcome is wonderful. The way, we've shot it, with a documentary style of camera on shoulder, we take the viewers into the core of the story and as closest as possible with the characters of the film so that they feel themselves within what is happening there; in other words, with the style of shooting, we let the viewers participate very intimately in what is going on in the story, whether there are tensions or relaxation and happiness. I could consider it a kind of neo-realism work as well in which everything is taking place in real places and real time, only the difference that we have professional actors. The overall rhythm of the film is very dynamic. I think it'll be a heart-throbbing film. It is a social drama.

The story takes place, just in less than twenty four hours and the story line is simple; triangle of a family relationship; a father, a son and a grandmother as a main thread of storyline. While there are a couple of other triangles of relationships that help the story go on. The location is a social center in Milan.
Kabul Press: What is the duration of THE PERSIAN DINNER and how long did it take you to shoot it?

Amin Wahidi: It is a feature length film, actually my first feature film and the running time is 105 minutes. Being an independent low-budget film, the project faced with a lot of problems and it took us about eight months to complete the shootings. We did not shoot continuously though; we had to have breaks in the middle because of production problems. But we all were strong to confront the problems. We continued on and went ahead until the end and finally soon we'll be ready to be screened.

Kabul Press: What about theatrical release of your film?
Amin Wahidi: For the moment, our first intention is sending THE PERSIAN DINNER, to different International Film Festivals, but we do not have a theatrical or Home Video distributor yet. Lately we have been contacted by a couple of Independent movie theatres in Milan, who were interested to screen our film, and we are looking forward to see what we can do. However, the premiere of the film will be in September. So, the festivals can also help us find interested theatrical or Home Video distributors.

Kabul Press: What other projects do you have after THE PERSIAN DINNER?
Amin Wahidi: Well, even if THE PERSIAN DINNER is still in post-production these days, I have a couple of other parallel projects as well. My next work after THE PERSIAN DINNER is a feature documentary tilted MANU ON THE ROAD. This film is about a brilliant female singer/songwriter MANUELA PELLEGATTA in Milan who is struggling for the release of her first studio album. I am following her artistic carrier during the year 2015. She is a unique talent and has a magical voice and has to be introduced to the entire world. The production of this feature documentary will be finished by the end of this year.

Then there is another feature docu-fiction titled TWELVE BICYCLES that will be shot between Italy and Sweden in 2017. It is too early now to talk about it.

Beside films, my other important projects are literary works such as novels novellas and short story collections. I have a novel, a novella and a couple of short story collections under work and hopefully by the end of 2016 I will be able to publish them if I find the interested publishers.

Kabul Press: Anything you would like to say to the viewers of your film/films?
Amin Wahidi: Well, I would just like to invite them to watch our film when we will be released in the movie theatres of Milan or elsewhere. It is very important to support independent filmmakers who in spite of many difficulties make films for their heart, for the people and not only for income.
And it is them, who will judge the film after they watched it.
Kabul Press: Which are the production houses that produced THE PERSIAN DINNER?
Amin Wahidi: Deedenow Cinema Production Afghanistan, Hazara People International Network, Remspot and Ri-Make. It is a co-production between Afghanistan and Italy.

Kabul Press: As the last question, why do you think your previous film, L'OSPITE/THE GUEST won the Venice City Award in 2014?
Amin Wahidi: Well, may be because, it was a film that could relate a strong story in a short time. It is a social drama that depicts the refugee problems in Italy. This short film is dedicated to the asylum seekers and the victim of mistreatments with refugees and the people who are drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while coming to Italy. Especially this year, as everyone knows, about one thousand people are being drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, so, L'OSPITE/THE GUEST is just a small tribute to all those victims. Therefore it caught the attention of the jury to assign this award to this short film.

Kabul Press: Thank you very much for your time.
Amin Wahidi: Thanks for your interview.

Kabul Press: First of all, we would like to ask you about your experiences in cinema.
Roberta Borgonovo: Thank you very much for the interview. Well, so far I have made short films, video clips, commercial spots and spots with social issues. Besides I have cooperated with a couple of directors. I have obtained a BA in directing from Milan Film School. And the Persian dinner is my first experience in an independent feature film.

Kabul Press: As an experience how did you find THE PERSIAN DINNER?
Roberta Borgonovo: I lived the shooting of The Persian Dinner as an occasion to jump into a complex project without giving myself the time to over think about its risks. That was good for me. It felt like starting a trip on a stormy ocean. But we finally landed.
Nothing is too out of reach when one puts into effect one's strong desire.

Kabul Press: What's your opinion about the independent cinema and how do you see the future of independent cinema in Italy?
Roberta Borgonovo: I see that there's a great need of telling strong stories: young directors, storytellers and their colleagues want to expose them selves in their stories, more that one would see at the official high budget Italian cinema.

Kabul Press: How is working with a blend of professional and non professional actors in a film?
Roberta Borgonovo: It was fantastic. The atmosphere and even the rushing time gave to the non professional ones the energy to act realistically their own roles. And the actors coming from well-known academies in Italy sometimes had to shake off some of their academic trainings to get the same goal. Helping both of them was an interesting and fantastic experience.

Kabul Press: Seeing your experiences, which role do you prefer the most, being an actress, a director or a producer?
Roberta Borgonovo: Director. All of my efforts in this and other projects are converging to get the knowledge and the self-confidence needed to guide a troupe to a “common dream”.

Kabul Press: What do you expect from THE PERSIAN DINNER?
Roberta Borgonovo: I expect to see the same energy bursting during the shooting in the edited movie. That's the path to follow in my opinion.

Kabul Press: Will you collaborate with the director Amin Wahidi, if it happens in the future?
Roberta Borgonovo: Yes, depending on the project he might propose.

Kabul Press: What's your message to the viewers of THE PERSIAN DINNER?
Roberta Borgonovo: The only thing I would tell them is to turn off the lights and to enjoy the movie and the enthusiastic madness of its story.

Kabul Press: Which are your own future cinematic projects?
Roberta Borgonovo: I'm exploring the audio-visual arts through shorter projects as music videos, adverts and so on. But at the moment I'm writing my first short-movie out of the Academy, that's my main concern. Then other projects and other movies are waiting to be realized. With more audacity and gall, after working on Amin's Persian Dinner!

Kabul Press: Thank You very much for your time.
Roberta Borgonovo: You're welcome

Classified By: Political Counselor Ann E. Pforzheimer for reasons 1.4(b ) and (d) 1. (C) Summary: According to Director General (DG) of the Independent Directorate of Kuchis (IDK) Abdul Wahab Sulemankheil, no female Kuchis and only 20-25% of eligible Kuchi male voters will vote in the August 20 presidential election. The DG attributes the expected low Kuchi voter turnout to their dissatisfaction over the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,s (GIRoA) lack of regard for Kuchi interests and concerns. The DG expects Kuchi voters will cast their ballots for President Karzai. End Summary. Kuchi Dissatisfaction May Lead to Low Voter Turnout --------------------------------------------- ------ 2. (C) In two separate meetings on August 4 and August 9, IDK DG Abdul Wahab Suleimankheil told us that no female Kuchis and only 20-25% of eligible Kuchi male voters would participate in the upcoming presidential election. He predicted that those Kuchis who went to the polls would follow their tribal elders, instructions and vote for Karzai. He blamed the expected low turnout on dissatisfaction among the Kuchis over a perceived lack of regard by the GIRoA for Kuchi issues and concerns — in particular, educational opportunities, healthcare, potable water, and their desire to participate in government. (Note: per ref tel, the IDK earlier this year undermined a potential local deal in Wardak by Governor Fedai to address these issues at the local level. Power struggles within the directorate over who speaks for Kuchis have occasionally blocked useful progress.) 3. (C) Citing a 1973 census (the last taken), in which the Kuchis comprised 16% of the Afghan population, the DG explained that at the time, Kuchis had 20 representatives in the Parliament, but that number has since fallen to 10 representatives in the Wolesi Jirga (House of the People or lower house), and three representatives in the Meshrano Jirga (upper house). Their under-representation in the lower house has prompted many Kuchis to break with GIRoA, and some to take up arms against it. (Note: According to the Afghan constitution, representation must be proportionate to the population of each ethnic population, i.e. if a particular ethnic group represents X% of the population, they should have X% of the 250 Wolesi Jirga seats. Applying this formula, Kuchis should have 40 representatives in the Wolesi Jirga, but have only ten. End Note) 4. (C) The Kuchis, explained the DG, are mostly illiterate and still live according to their traditions. He said that because of these traditions, in Paktia, Paktika, and Khost provinces, no Kuchi or Pashtun women were permitted to register to vote in either 2004 or 2009. He claimed the GIRoA,s assertion that women had registered in these areas was false, and that Kuchi and Pashtun women would not be permitted to vote on August 20. (Note: The DG,s assertion that women have not registered to vote in these areas is contradicted by reporting from PRT Jalalabad, which reported that mobile registration teams had been very successful in their door-to-door registration campaign with both male and female voters. However, whether the female voters can get out of their homes to vote is another matter. End Note). The DG cited three major blocks to voter (especially women) turnout: 1) Kuchi tribal culture, which prevents women from leaving their homes, making it difficult to vote; 2) poor security, which will keep people home; and 3) dissatisfaction with the GIRoA, efforts by Ashraf Ghani, Karzai and others (Abdullah Abdullah has not reached out to the Kuchis) to court the Kuchi vote. Kuchi Dissatisfaction Fuels the Insurgency ------------------------------------------ 5. (C) The DG noted the Kuchis have always played an important role in Afghan society, both in living the traditional nomadic lifestyle of the ancient Afghans, and in their involvement in the wars and revolutions that have torn Afghanistan apart. The Kuchis continue to play such a role now. Opponents of the various Afghan governments have historically manipulated and played on Kuchi dissatisfaction to incite revolution and fuel opposition to foreign involvement in Afghanistan. The DG said the Taliban have gained Kuchi support by manipulating Kuchi dissatisfaction with the government. The DG estimated that over 1/2 of Taliban are Kuchis, who had been easily persuaded to side with the Taliban out of ignorance. For example, in his home province of Paktika, the majority of Taliban commanders are Kuchis. (Comment: The Other Government Agency office estimates Kuchis comprise only a single-digit percentage of the Taliban. The DG may be inflating the participation of KABUL 00002382 002 OF 002 the Kuchis in the Taliban movement to ensure Kuchi interests are considered in any peace-promotion efforts. End Comment). IDK-Karzai Relations -------------------- 6. (C) The DG explained that in response to Kuchi dissatisfaction, Karzai had created the IDK two years ago. The IDK is composed of six departments (Education, Health, Water, Provincial Liaison, Administrative Affairs, and Documentation), with offices in all 34 provinces. It has worked to improve the lives of Kuchis, but is under-resourced, he said. Despite this fact, the IDK had been instrumental in averting the violence that plagued the Kuchis' annual migration to summer pasture lands last year. The IDK, acting as go-between for Karzai and Kuchi elders, had arranged meetings and relayed Karzai's requests for Kuchis not to migrate to Bamyan and the rest of "Hazarajat" (the Hazara homeland) this year. The DG said that in exchange for their promise not to migrate to Hazarajat, Karzai had provided the Kuchis with a modest amount of money to offset expenses. By courting the Kuchis, Karzai had maintained peace. Kuchis and Reconciliation ------------------------- 7. (C) The DG argued that only by working with, and empowering, the tribes and tribal councils could the GIRoA and the IC hope to bring peace to Afghanistan. He asserted that given the Kuchi,s important role in Afghanistan — in particular, their representation in Taliban forces — peace was "in the hands" of the Kuchis and other tribes. He warned that if the GIRoA and the IC do not work with the tribes, the advent of more soldiers and money will make no difference. The DG added that many Kuchis feel that, despite GIRoA statements to the contrary, no steps had been taken to reconcile the insurgents. He also claimed that many reconciliation proposals had been sent to U.S. Ambassador Khalilzad and GIRoA in 2004 by the Kuchis, but that no action had been taken on the proposals. The DG opined that additional support and resources must be allocated to achieve reconciliation. Tribal counsels also need additional resources to enable them to convince Kuchi Taliban to return to their tribes. Local leaders should be engaged in each province as the best to deal with local Taliban. Citing the success of Kuchi tribal forces against the Taliban in Pakistan,s Swat Valley, the DG suggested that tribal security forces (arbaki and leshkar) should be empowered to defend local communities and reconcilees against the Taliban in Afghanistan. 8. (C) Comment: Many of the DG,s issues have been raised in past meetings. However, if Kuchi dissatisfaction leads to such a potentially low turnout, it could signal future problems. If only 20-25% of the Kuchis vote, with a corresponding diminution of their political power, dissatisfaction could continue to grow in that volatile community, possibly fomenting even more unrest. As a traditional tribal community, the Kuchis have long relied on support and payments from the GIRoA to support their people. The Kuchis from the border areas were historically paid to protect the borders from incursions, and were used by Afghan kings to alter the demographics of minority-held areas to prevent uprisings. Although we do not concur with the DG,s assertion that over half of the Taliban are of Kuchi origin, Kuchis are indeed active in the Taliban and lead some local units. End Comment. They have chosen to observe World Poetry Day by raising awareness and saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and that something must be done to stop the genocide of the Hazara people.

The letter is addressed to The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, and President of the United States, Barack Obama. The letter is requesting that they take the necessary steps to ensure the security and safety of the Hazara people.

For more than a century now, the Hazara people of Afghanistan and Pakistan have been victims of systematic crimes such as genocide, slavery, sexual abuse, war crimes, and discrimination.

Hazara poet, Kamran Mir Hazar, who crafted the letter notes, “Article two of the Convention on Genocide describes the dire situation of the Hazaras, and the world must no longer ignore the continuing ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Hazaras. We the poets around the world will continue our work to support the Hazaras by writing a chain poem and collecting more signatures.” he added.

Despite the deployment of thousands of international troops in Afghanistan, Hazaras are regularly attacked by Afghan Kuchis, backed by the Taliban and the Afghan government. Hazara roads are often blocked by Taliban gunmen. Hazara cars are randomly halted and the passengers murdered. In central Afghanistan, a huge population of Hazaras have been marginalized and denied their basic human rights.
As a result, millions of Hazaras have fled Afghanistan, creating unnecessary refugee populations in countries like Turkey, Greece, Australia, and Indonesia. In Pakistan as recently as 16 February 2013, more than three hundred Hazara men, women and children were killed or injured in a terrorist bombing in Quetta, Pakistan.

Poets World-wide implore world leaders to declare of a state of emergency regarding the Hazara situation in Afghanistan; to pressure Afghan and Pakistani governments to stop discrimination and stop supporting terrorists groups; to grant asylum to Hazara asylum seekers; establish an international Truth Commission to investigate the systematic crimes against Hazaras; to open cases concerning genocide and human rights violations in international courts such as the ICC; to protect Hazaras in Afghanistan with international troops. We appeal to international media to investigate and report on activities against Hazaras in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Open Letter from Poets World-wide with signers is available in English, Spanish, Italian, French, Hazaragi/Dari and Russian languages on www.HazaraRights.com

Working with celebrities like Andy Warhol, Tab Hunter, Deborah Harry and Bill Murray, in the rough and tumble punk rock art scene of New York's Lower East Side and SoHo, Maier tells a revealing and often humorous story of struggling artists and rebels working against great odds and multiple constraints and barriers to creativity.
